Autumn in Malta remains warm and bright, with the sea still perfect for swimming well into the season. It is an excellent time for walking and hiking, as well as visiting the island’s historic forts, palaces, churches and castles without the summer crowds. The season also brings notable events, including the Middle Sea Race, when hundreds of yachts from around the world gather in the Grand Harbour. National celebrations such as Independence Day and Victory Day take place during this time.

The Mediterranean

The sea remains warm well into autumn, making it one of the best times for swimming around the islands. Hundreds of yachts from around the world start and finish in the Grand Harbour, sailing a demanding course around Sicily. Watching the fleet depart from Valletta’s bastions or follow their return against autumn light is unforgettable, even for non-sailors.

Autumn includes national celebrations such as Independence Day (21 September) and Victory Day (8 September), as well as Birgufest, when thousands of candles illuminate the streets of Birgu in a quietly magical evening.
